What is the Social Responsibility Norm?

And how it relates to giving back…

What is the Social Responsibility Norm?

The social responsibility norm (SRN) is a belief that we should assist others in need without prospects of receiving payback in return. The social responsibility norm brings with it a sense of duty and a higher purpose – as if we are all contributors to the advancement of humankind.

Generally, the social responsibility norm is a person who is in a position of authority or has a higher social status. These people are expected to help others because of their status, wealth, or role in our culture.

Morality is one of the threads that bind us as a society. These threads shouldn’t be determined by authority or status. At Philanthropi, we aim to shatter the social responsibility norm philosophy that only a few are obligated to give back.

We believe that everyone has a role to play in the ecosystem of giving. In fact, it is everyday givers that are now leading the charge in philanthropy.

Giving back allows everyone to participate in the social responsibility norm in a way that’s most comfortable for them. It enables you to spread good in your local community, which can echo nationally and globally. And giving back turns the social responsibility norm from an ideology into a movement.

Ways You Can Give Back

How you give back is a personal decision that reflects your personality, beliefs, and causes that connect with you. When looking to give back, there are several ways to do so.

  • Volunteer

Time is a valuable resource that most organizations can’t get enough of. Many nonprofits need people to share their knowledge or lend a helping hand in running their day-to-day operations. For example, many food banks often look for volunteers to pack the boxes given to shelters.

  • Start a Food or Clothing Drive

Food insecurity affects many citizens in communities across the U.S. A warm coat during the winter months or the right attire for a job interview can make a difference for those who can’t easily attain them. Another way to give back to your community locally is to organize a food or clothing drive and give the donated clothing or nonperishable food to your local church or another organization to receive your items.

  • Use Your Voice on Your Platforms

Social media is one of the best ways to amplify your voice about the causes that you’re passionate about. You can follow your favorite nonprofits and like, and share their posts. You can also create posts about why certain organizations/causes speak to your heart.

  • Donate

Like time, money is also a resource nonprofit are always in need of. For everyday philanthropists, one of the best ways to contribute to the social responsibility norm is through microdonation. Philanthropi’s Impact Account™ empowers everyday givers to give back with a simple swipe of a finger. With an Impact Account™, you can create your own personal foundation that can honor your family’s legacy or be named for someone who has inspired you, as well as make microdonations that can build up over time and be donated to your favorite charity. The understanding that we are all contributors to the social responsibility norm is clear. Find your methods to give back best, and begin today!
